Matariki Festival
For five weeks in the winter of 2018, Marlborough came together under the Matariki sky in Picton for activities, food, lights and performances to mark the Māori new year.
The festival included two headline events on the Picton Foreshore. KAI was a mid-winter feast of mouthwatering dishes prepared by local chefs. AHO ('to shine’) was a light extravaganza featuring kapa haka performances, poi workshops, stilt walkers, fire performers, food stalls and more. AHO culminated in a public fireworks display, lighting up Picton harbour.
The community Matariki Festival was launched by Picton Smart + Connected and coordinated by Marlborough Events. Due to return in 2020, the festival was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
